Analysis on development status and prospect of Chinese carbon fibre

  The carbon fibre as an important product in strategic emerging industries is drawing more attention. Domestic carbon fibre production line construction is extraordinarily lively. Compared with Japan, R&D and industrialization technology of domestic carbon fibre industry falls behind for 20-25 years. So far, the domestic carbon fibre industry is at the cultivation stage. 

  For products, Chinese high-performance carbon fibre is basically blank. China only has carbon fibre products equal to or less than T300, T700 carbon fibre is at the engineering research stage, and T800 and MJ carbon fibres are at the technological breakthrough stage, with single mark and specification. Currently, domestic 3k (3000 fibres per tow)/12k T300 carbon fibres are dominant products. Foreign maximum production capacity of single line amounts to 1800T (12k), with high production efficiency. By contrast, Chinese production technology and equipment scale have relatively-big gap, so there are very big cost variance, which results that Chinese carbon fibre products are short of market competitiveness. 

  Compared with relatively-backward technology, carbon fibre production line construction is extraordinarily lively. Currently, China has nearly 30 carbon fibre manufacturers, with planned production capacity of 70000-80000 tons/year. Besides some private enterprises, some large state-owned enterprises such as PetroChina, Sinopec, ChemChina, Sinosteel, CNBM, CSGI, etc. also squeeze into this industry. 

  On the one hand, such a hot investment is due to the market prospect of the carbon fibre. The growth points of future carbon fibre market lie in some emerging industries, such as wind power blade, building material, automobile, big aircraft, pressure vessel, high-voltage transmission line, etc. Its consumption is certain to be increased greatly, even hundreds of thousands tons are insufficient. On the other hand, some local governments follow suit blindly. 

  Technological foundation of the carbon fibre industry is not yet laid, so production capacity is hard to be transformed into output. Currently, China only has a few carbon fibre enterprises with high technological level; due to shortage of the scale advantages, the price for the same-quality products in China is far higher than that in foreign countries. As far as I know, cost of Japanese Toray T700 carbon fibre is fairly equal to that of Chinese T300 carbon fibre. 

  Carbon fibre is viewed as strategic supplies in the Western countries, it is prohibited to sell and transport to China, let alone transfer technology. In 1980s, China brought in large-tow pre-oxidation furnace and carbide furnace from RK Corporation, which failed to run normally. Practice has proved that, whether in politics or in business, the carbon fibre companies with high technological level are impossible to transfer technologies or to sell equipment to China. However, the center of high-performance fibre and composite market is transferred to Asia further, and the prospect of Chinese high-performance carbon fibre composite industry is immeasurable.
